PROTECNICA’S ALAJAJIAN AIMING FOR F3 PODIUM AT A1

After a late-season break, the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship for the CAMS Gold Star swings back into action this weekend, and Protecnica Racing’s Chris Alajajian is looking forward to getting back among the thick of the action.

Alajajian will be part of an Australian Formula 3 record field of 26 cars who will take to Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway, as a support race to the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Australia.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend a lot,” said the 19 year old, who last weekend competed in the WPS of Rally Bathurst. “I look forward to every race weekend, but there is something extra about this weekend. Being a support category for A1 Grand Prix, I think is going to bring that little bit extra out of everyone.

“As a driver, I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere, but also the chance to do well after the tough last round we had.”

The remaining two rounds of the series will be held at the 3.93km Sydney circuit, which is Alajajian’s home circuit. It will be here that Alajajian strives to achieve the target he has set himself for the remainder of the season - second place in the championship. He currently sits third, 40 points behind second placed Michael Trimble.

“It is going to be a challenge to catch Michael, but that’s what racing is about. I always go into the next round aiming high, so I am aiming to do well this weekend, and get up there in the field getting lots of points on the board which will help us with our aim of trying to get second in the championship.”

In the Formula 3 races at Eastern Creek in July, Alajajian scored a pair of second place finishes in just Protecnica Racing’s second weekend of open wheel competition. With both Alajajian and Protecnica now having more experience under their belt, Alajajian is looking forward to seeing how things pan out this weekend.

“We are pretty much going to have a different car for this weekend compared to when we last raced here,” he said. “We have tested the car at Eastern Creek, but we really didn’t push it to the limits. It was more just focusing on learning and making sure everything is in place for this weekend. Now we will find out how effective it was.

“The team have been working so hard to get the car into top condition. If you look at how they have progressed in the three rounds, we have been improving all the time. We have been keeping our heads down, concentrating on this weekend, getting everything in place and hopefully we'll get a good result.”

Alajajian is one of six drivers in this weekend’s field to have won a race in Australian Formula 3 competition.

He won the opening race of the 2005 season at Wakefield Park, and held a share of the championship lead for the first two rounds, before a mechanical problem at round three cost him valuable points and momentum.

“With the number of top drivers driving top cars, will make it very competitive this weekend,” says Alajajian. “We are going to go out there, do our best and see what happens.

“Our year started off well with a win at Wakefield and leading the championship; hopefully it can end well, starting this weekend.”

Protecnica Racing thanks the ongoing support of Jack Hillermans Smash, Elf Oil, Scuderia Veloce Motors, Nudie, Workflow Systems, Bilstein, Moody Kiddell & Partners, Heasman Steering, Disc Brakes Australia, Hawk Performance, Monza Mens Boutique, H & R Springs and APT Signs.
